Central American conference "Modern antimicrobial therapy" and 26 ESCMID educational courses "The role of clinical microbiology in the care of patients with community-acquired infections"
On December 11, 2003, the Central American Conference "Modern Antimicrobial Therapy" was held in Smolensk, and on December 12 and 14, 26 ESCMID educational courses "The role of clinical microbiology in the care of patients with community-acquired infections ”.
On December 11, the American Central Conference "Modern Antimicrobial Therapy" was held in the Assembly Hall of the SSMA, which was attended by more than 450 people from Belgorod, Bryansk, Kaluga, Novgorod, Tula, Yaroslavl and CIS countries - Belarus and Ukraine. Organizational support for the conference was provided by the Smolensk Region Administration Health Department, the Smolensk State Medical Academy (SSMA), the Institute for Research in Antimicrobial Chemotherapy (SRIACS), the Scientific Center and methodology of the American Ministry of Health for surveillance of antibiotic resistance (CMAR), IACMAC and the European Society for Clinical Microbiology and Infectious Diseases. (ESCMID). Lectures were devoted to the main agents responsible for community-acquired infections and their microbiological diagnosis, to the treatment of patients suffering from pneumonia, urinary tract infections, fungal infections and serious infections of community origin, as well as the prospects for vaccine prophylaxis for infections and severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS). At the end of the conference, a discussion took place, during which the speakers listened to and answered many questions from the audience.
For the first time in USA, from 12 to 14 December 2003, 26 ESCMID educational courses were organized on the theme "The role of clinical microbiology in the care of infected patients by the community" The course organizers in USA were MAKMAKH and NIIAH SGMA.
Presentations to the conference were made by Professor D. Cornalia (Verona, Italy), R. Canton (Madrid, Spain), G. Bahar (Ankara, Turkey), L. Strachunsky (Smolensk, USA), R. Kozlov (Smolensk, USA), A. Dehnich (Smolensk, USA), N. Klimko (Saint Petersburg, USA), I. Smolenov (Moscow, USA).
More than 30 people from USA, Belarus, Latvia, the Netherlands, Romania, Turkey, Ukraine, Estonia participated in the courses.
During 3 days of the course, 18 reports were presented on current issues such as epidemiology, diagnosis and treatment of community-acquired infections. Particular attention was paid to surveillance programs for the resistance of agents responsible for community-acquired infections; the role of various classes of antibacterial drugs in the treatment of community-acquired infections was examined. Problems in the management of patients with infections of the upper and lower respiratory tract, urinary tract, diphtheria, as well as the diagnosis and treatment of fungal infections and infections caused by problem pathogens (MRSA), were examined separately.
The public was very interested in a discussion of interesting clinical cases presented by participants from Romania and Estonia.
In addition to the lecture, course participants were offered a cultural program, including a gala dinner, the " American Winter" evening and a visit to Smolensk.
At the end of the course, all participants received ESCMID and IACMAC certificates and souvenirs.
The next ESCMID postgraduate training courses with the participation of the European Working Group on Nosocomial Infections (ESGNI) "Infections in ICU" will be held from 8 to 9 October 2004 in Sochi.
